Battle of the Books (BOB)
Elementary – A team of 4-6 students read books from a preselected list. In the spring, the team will compete against other schools in a team written test challenging their knowledge of the books. The competition takes place at the AEA 267 in Cedar Falls in March /April.
Middle School – Teams of 4-6 students read books from a preselected list. In the spring, there are two competition opportunities:
1) The teams will compete against other schools’ teams in a friendly multi-event challenge.
2) One team will compete against other schools in a team written test challenging their knowledge of the books. The competition takes place at the AEA 267 in Cedar Falls.
National Geography Bee
An opportunity for 4-8th graders to participate in a national competition using materials prepared by the National Geographic Society. The contest is designed to motivate students to learn about the world and how it works. There are three levels of competition: school, state and national.
National History Day
A student driven research project on a topic of their choice that would fit the year’s theme. The competition has a wide variety of project categories and participation can include individuals to groups. There are three levels of competition: regional, state and national.
National History Bee
The National History Bee is an individual academic competition for grades 4-8 across America. The bee tests knowledge of a wide range of historical topics that have a direct relevance to what students are learning in the classroom. There are three levels of competition: school, regional and national.
6th Grade Math Bee
Teams of four students take individual tests covering the following six areas: patterns & functions, number sense & estimation, ratio/proportion/percent, geometry & measurement, probability & statistics and team problem solving. Individual scores plus the team round are tabulated for the team score. There are two levels of competition: regional and state.
An opportunity for 6-8 graders to compete as a team and individuals to match their math skills against their peers. Students will meet once/week starting in mid-October to work on problem solving skills. Study sessions will be offered. There are three levels of competition: regional, state and national.
Students in grades 6-8 compete in teams of four students against 1-2 teams at a time testing their knowledge on a wide variety of topics. The majority of the middle school competitions are in the spring with the national competition held in late may/early June.
Students in grades 5-8 are eligible to participate in the school spelling bee. The top four spellers advance to the North Iowa Regional Spelling Bee held at the AEA 267 in Clear Lake.
